Owl City — the musical brainchild of lone member Adam Young — hasn’t released a new single since Oct. 2011. So, fans will be happy to hear that not only is he prepping a new album, but he’s already dropped the lead single, ‘Shooting Star.’ And guess what? We’ve got an exclusive look at the ‘Shooting Star’ lyric video for your viewing/listening pleasure.
Opening with a loop of dreamy, high and low digital blips, the intro of ‘Shooting Star’ has a sound reminiscent of the Postal Service’s hit ‘Such Great Heights.’ Adam Young’s soft, breathy vocals kick in (which also sound a bit Ben Gibbard-esque but with more pop appeal) during the verses, but grows in strength and power as the chorus of ‘Shooting Star’ rolls around.
Like the song itself, the ‘Shooting Star’ lyric video has an ethereal, spacey quality. The video includes a montage of twinkling stars, swirling beams of light, bright nebulas, and atmospheric clouds. In quick flashes, Young reveals the lyrics to the loving song:
“When the sun goes down, and the lights burn out / Then it’s time for you to shine / Brighter than the shooting star / So shine no matter where you are / Fill the darkest night, with a brilliant light / Cause it’s time for you to shine / Brighter than a shooting star / So shine no matter where you are, tonight.”
Stay tuned for more updates on Owl City’s latest, still-in-the-works LP. In the meantime, head over to iTunes orAmazon to download the ‘Shooting Star’ single, and check out the lyric video here!
Owl City, aka Adam Young, has been busy writing his third album and now, with a UK release announcement imminent, he is thrilled to announce his return to the UK on 7th August with a show at Kings College, London.
The leak of one of his new tracks ‘Dementia’ has sparked a great deal of excitement and intrigue, with some describing the collaboration with blink-182’s Mark Hoppus as the perfect pairing.
Adam describes the track as dealing with the ‘crazy, schizophrenic thoughts and feelings’ he experienced in the wake of the success of his chart-topping 2009 platinum debut album Ocean Eyes.
He hints that songs like ‘Shooting Star’ on his new album will appeal to fans of house, trance, dub-step, and other styles of EDM with its big euphoric house beats and mentions some of the great trance DJs of the last decade (Armin van Buuren, ATB, Above & Beyond, Tiësto, Ferry Corsten) as his influences.

Wanted to reach out and say thanks to everyone for all the kind words coming in about the new EP. It’s an encouraging thing when you pour yourself into something and people go out of their way to let you know they enjoy it — even priceless. I’ve never written a song to earn public gratitude and people obviously don’t have to tell me what they think, nor do I expect them to feel like they need to, but many still choose to do so and it makes me feel like a champ, fuel on the fire kinda thing. As always, reading your positive thoughts is a morale boost if there ever was one. It’s a thrill to hear people say the new songs sound so fresh and new and expressive because I believe it’s a bummer for an artist of any kind to hear, “Yeah it’s great but it’s a lot like your previous work.”
There is no old Adam Young, there is no new Adam Young, merely different colors and different brushstrokes over the same canvas. Creativity is all about pushing boundaries and pressing onward and I prefer the Darkwing Duck approach to artistry. So thank you. I’m feeling the love. Let’s get dangerous.

Synth-pop act Owl City will head out on another round of U.S. shows this summer, this time promoting an impending new album which is scheduled to surface later this year.
The electronica project of musician Adam Young will begin the journey with a July 9 show in Toronto before moving down into the U.S. for seven major market shows spread across the nation. The itinerary includes a July 18 appearance with Demi Lovato at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre.
Owl City then heads to Asia and Europe for a few dates that stretch into early August.
On May 15, Owl City will unveil an EP entitled “Shooting Star,” featuring four tracks which will be on the still-untitled summertime studio release. The first single and the EP’s title track features Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus on guest vocals and was co-written by Matt Thiessen (Relient K), Stargate (Rihanna, Wiz Khalifa), Josh Crosby, Nate Company and Emily Wright.
The forthcoming full-length album will follow last summer’s “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” which peaked at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 and at No. 2 on the magazine’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Owl City’s Adam Young has been out of the spotlight for some time now, busy writing a brand new studio album. With a UK release just around the corner, Owl City will return to the live stage on 7th August at London’s Kings College.
After album track ‘Dementia’ leaked online, fans have been left excited and intrigued about what else the forthcoming new record holds. Some have described the partnership of Adam and Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus as the perfect pairing.
Adam spoke about the track ‘Dementia’ and revealed the song was written following the success of his successful 2009 debut album ‘Ocean Eyes. He describes the track as “crazy, schizophrenic thoughts and feelings”, all of which he experienced after the release of his debut record.
Adam announced via his Twitter page that a new EP is to be released on tomorrow, Tuesday 15th May. The EP is to contain four songs from the full album; ‘Shooting Star’, ‘Dementia (feat. Mark Hoppus)’, ‘Gold’ and ‘Take It All Away’. Check back to Stereoboard for further details on the new Owl City album.

When it came time to record Adam Young’s third album as Owl City, the Minnesota native set himself the following challenge: ”Over the past several years I’d become fascinated with trying to capture magic in a jar through simple, concise pop songs,” he says. “I saw it as a great challenge to try to come up with catchy, unique, and memorable songs because‘ it was a new method of songwriting I’d never approached before. I believe artists should never look back or repeat themselves and this was a new frontier for me.”
To create the instantly memorable, feel-good moments he envisioned {like first single “Shooting Star”), Young sought out co-writers and outside producers for the first time, enlisting his friend Matt Thiessen (Reiient K), Stargate (Rihanna, Wiz Khalifa), and the team of Josh Crosby, Nate Campany, and Emily Wright (the latter known for her work with Dr. Luke). “I made my first two records on my own without any outside help and learned that it’s easy to overthink what you do by allowing yourself to become too emotionally invested in what you’re doing,” Young says. “Initially, I was anxious about letting other people co-pilot the solo endeavor I’d always played close to the chest, but it was exhilarating not having 100 percent control over what happened. In the end for me, it’s all about trying new things as an artist. Working with other writers taught me to care about a song as a piece of art created to reach people versus worrying about getting the final say or having my own way. Collaborating kills off a lot of ego and pride issues and that’s a really healthy thing.”
The process enabled Young to tap into collective human experiences in his lyrics and connect on a larger scale. “I’m known for creating music based on whimsical ideas and concepts from my own headspace, and another set of parameters I set for myself was to write about things people might relate to better,” he says. “Dementia” documents the “crazy, schizophrenic thoughts and feelings” Young dealt with in the wake of the success of his chart-topping 2009 platinum debut album Ocean Eyes, while songs like “Shooting Star” pulsates with euphoric dance beats that will appeal to fans of house, trance, dub-step, and other styles of EDM. grew up listening to dance music and I’ve always wanted to make a dance record,” Young says. “European dance music has so much influence over pop right now, so it made sense to me. I admire a lot of the great trance DJs of the past ten years, guys like Armin van Buuren, ATB, Above & Beyond, Tiésto, and Ferry Corsten.” Other tracks follow on the more r0ck—in5pired sounds that Young began to explore on his second album, 2011’s All Things Bright and Beautiful. “Dementia” even features guest vocals by one of Young’s heroes, blink-182’s Mark Hoppus.
